Charles Sergison (1655-1732), Royal Navy administrator and MP, occupied Cuckfield Park in 1693. He died without issue in 1732, so his estate was left to his great nephew, Thomas Warden, who had married one of his nieces and who changed his name to Sergison, by private act of Parliament. Devis painted numerous members of the Sergison/Warden family, presumably at the same time; other works include the portrait of Sarah Warden and a further male member of the Sergison family (see G. C. Williamson, English Conversation Pieces, 1931, p. 11).
