Provenance
Private Collection, The Netherlands for at least 70 years
Very few paintings by Dirck van Hoogstraten, a Mennonite silversmith, remain. He travelled extensively across Italy and Germany, where he began to focus on painting and drawing, eventually returning to The Netherlands where he joined the Dordrecht Guild of St Luke in 1624. He is probably best known for being his son Samuel's first teacher before the latter moved to Amsterdam, after his father's death, to study under Rembrandt in 1643. See lot 22 for a work by Samuel van Hoogstraten.
