ONE OF THE MOST IMPACTFUL INVENTIONS OF THE 21ST CENTURY & THE DEVICE THAT TRANSFORMED APPLE INTO THE WORLD'S LARGEST TECHNOLOGY COMPANY.

Although Apple had earlier flirted with producing a phone and a mobile computer, it wasn't until late 2004 when Steve Jobs began gathering some of Apple's best and brightest on the second floor of 2 Infinite Loop at Apple's Cupertino headquarters to work on a secret project code named Purple. What began as two rival groups—P1, an iPod phone led by Tony Fadell, a key figure behind the iPod; and P2, a hybrid of multi-touch technology and Mac software led by ex-NeXT software engineer Scott Forstall—eventually coalesced into a single team essentially pursuing the P2 model.

Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone in his keynote address at the Macworld Conference & Expo on January 9, 2007 and when the iPhone 1 was released on June 29 of that year, it was an instant hit with thousands waiting in line become the first iPhone owners. Stock shortages were reported within the first hour of availability.

The original iPhone featured visual voicemail, multi-touch gestures, HTML email, Apple's Safari web browser, threaded text messaging, an "iPod" music and video player app, a YouTube app and a map app. Although there were smartphones before the iPhone, none had such capabilities and a revolutionary feature set. It was a breakthrough device and the public finally had a computer that could fit in one's pocket.
