A POWELL & LEALAND BRASS MICROSCOPE.

Signed and inscribed "POWELL & LEALAND / 170 / Euston Road / LONDON" to the arm and "1894" near adjustment screw, in a fitted mahogany case; with a separate fitted mahogany case of lenses and accessories; and a spare ocular lens. Height overall: 49 cm; height of instrument: 40 cm.

The Powell & Lealand microscope, the "Aristocrat" of scientific instruments, was introduced in 1875 and remained virtually unchanged for nearly 40 years. State of the art in its day, it was also quite expensive, and today is prized by collectors of scientific instruments for its beauty and accuracy.
