Some elements of the offered lot are reminiscent of similar meubles d'appui or pier cabinets either by or attributed to the cabinet maker Mathieu Befort which were typically produced during the period 1855-1875. The mounts are similar to a number of examples recorded or known to be by Befort, whilst the design of the hardstone inserts and the variety of stones used are also typical of those found on several related models of pier cabinet.
