Bernard Van Risenburgh (died circa 1765) known as B.V.R.B. was one of the most accomplished ébénistes of the Louis XV period and established a workshop in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. BVRB mastered the technique of bois de bout end-cut marquetry of floral design. He is also celebrated for the quality of his mounts and the fact that many of them appear exclusively on pieces by or attributed to him suggests that he may have had a hand in their design or an agreement with the bronzier that they were kept exclusively for his use. BVRB is known to have worked with the marchands merciers, particularly Lazare Duvaux and Thomas-Joachim Hébert.
The offered lot forms part of a group of tables all stamped or attributed to BVRB which all differ slightly in overall design features. They fall into two distinct categories, firstly those with a fixed top and a drawer fitted with an inkwell which were intended for use as writing tables. The second group with hinged tops, compartmentalised interiors and a lateral drawer with an inkwell which were intended for not only writing but for ladies to store toiletries and ribbons.
A comparable table by B.V.R.B. previously formed part of the collection of Dr Horace Wood Brock, a renowned collector of English and French 18th century furniture, drawings and objects. However much of this collection is now in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, Houstoun Museum of Fine Arts and J. Paul Getty Museum. This related example was gifted by Dr H.W. Brock in honour of Martin Chapman and in celebration of the Legion of Honor's Centennial, see Accession No. 2023.53.5
