Footnotes

A design by Robert Adam for a comparable oval 'pier glass' to each of the two mirrors comprising the offered lot was made for the Parlour at Kenwood House. This drawing featured as plate VIII, No. II in R. and J. Adam's "Works in Architecture", Vol. I, published in 1774. Another oval mirror design with similar ram's mask and bellflower swag carving, along with a notably comparable reeded surround, to the present example, was executed by Thomas Johnson in his 1775 publication, "A Set of Engravings", pl. 5. Both of these appear illustrated in Pictorial Dictionary of British 18th Century Furniture Design, compiled by E. White, 2000, Woodbridge, p. 346.
