Sale Coordinator for Furniture, Sculpture, Rugs & Tapestries

Head of Sale Carpets and Tapestries
Provenance
Probably formerly part of the Roger Warner Collection, Sotheby's London, 5 May 1967, lot 69 (part).
The present lot represents a scene of the Triumph of Chastity over Love. The original series was woven in the first quarter of the 16th century in Brussels on a 'low warp' the most sophisticated weaving technique of the period -not to mention the most expensive.
The series was based on the poem I Trionfi (the Triumphs) written by Petrarch between 1352 and 1374. The series comprised six monumental tapestries woven in rich wools and silks to represent each Triumph, these included The Triumph of Love, the triumph of Chastity over Love, Death over Chastity, Frame over Death, Time over Fame and Eternity over Time.
