An almost identical table to the offered lot, albeit one described as Italian, sold Sotheby's, New York, 27 April 2007, Fine French and Continental Furniture, lot 73. Another comparable, one described as 'possibly Italian', sold Christie's, South Kensington, 23 February 2010, lot 500.
However, the distinctive combination on all three tables (including the present example) of intricate engraved ivory and tortoiseshell tablet inlay on an ebony ground, along with chequered borders and chequer line-inlaid surrounds appears to be more redolent of the output of Spain from a much earlier era. But such aspects also seem simultaneously reminiscent of certain Flemish furniture of a similar date. They are also representative of the fashion during the 19th century for the revival of older styles, more specifically a re-imagining or reinterpretation of the high Baroque period.
The item within this lot containing ivory has been registered in accordance with the Ivory Act (Section 10) Ref Q2L7EYST.
