Footnotes

Provenance
Sotheby's London, 29th June 2005
The Grant Family
Monymusk House, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire

The present lot's design can be traced, in part, to the work of Peter Paul Rubens c.1616 which narrates the life of the Roman Consul Decius Mus and the Latin War of 240-338 B.C. In particular the composition here appears to draw on two of the set of seven designs. The figural grouping and composition are reminiscent of Loot of the Romans with more specific figural details from Decius Mus Recounting His Dream to the Roman Troops.

Literature
A.Rowan, House of Monymusk Aberdeenshire - I', Country Life, 19th October 1972, P.953, fig 8.
