Head of Department
Provenance
Property of a gentleman collector.
As one of the founding members of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and later an officer of the Legion of Honour, Albert-Ernest Carrier de Belleuse worked in a variety of styles during his lifetime including neo-Baroque, Rococo and Realism and in a various sculptural mediums including bronze, marble terracotta and porcelain. Prior to 1868 the sculptor would sign his works "Carrier" or "A. Carrier", but he later changed this to "Carrier-Belleuse" which would date the offered lot, which is undoubtedly inspired by the works of the late 18th and early 19th century sculptor, Claude Michel, known as 'Clodion', to the later years of his life.
