John Bell (British, 1812-1895): A carved white marble figure of a young girl together with a similar period carved white marble figure entitled 'The Friend of the Family'

The former depicting a kneeling child clad in a classical draped robe with ribbon-tied flowing hair, holding a dead songbird before a make-shift open grave, a small spade leaning against her knee, on naturalistic oval base, signed J.BELL ST, the latter depicting a kneeling child in classical draped robes, flowing hair dressed with a ribbon, feeding a hen and its chicks, seated on her lap, on naturalistic circular base, the first 64cm high, 28cm wide, 42cm deep, the second 58cm high, 42cm wide and 37cm deep (2 )

Footnotes

John Bell enrolled at the Royal Academy school and won his first medal in 1833. He was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy from 1832 to 1871 and is known to have worked on the Wellington monument in Guildhall. Perhaps his most popular work, 'The Eagle Slayer' which was executed in marble and first shown in 1844 became the first bronze reduction to be offered by the Art Union in 1845. Such was its success with the British public that the marble was subsequently shown again at the Great Exhibition in 1851.
