John Parish White (1855-1917) established his Pyghtle Works on the Bromham Road, Bedford in 1896 after beginning his working life in the building trade. The firm produced an extensive range of garden ornaments in lead, marble, bronze, stone and terracotta and their catalogues of the early 20th century featured numerous garden pieces either copied from antique pieces or produced in earlier period styles.
A similar single figure of an infant satyr playing a pipe was sold at Christies, The Michael Roberts Collection of Garden Ornaments, Kent, 27th September 2004, lot 446.
