Head of Department
A clock of very similar design although on paw rather than turtle feet by the Parisian bronzier Pierre-François Feuchère (French, 1737-1823) is in the collection of the Musée de Malmaison, France (MM.40.47.470), whilst another similar clock, originally supplied to the Spanish royal family, is now apparently in the collection of the Palacio Real in Madrid.
Feuchère established one of the largest and most prestigious workshops for the production of luxurious gilt bronzes during the late 18th and early 19th century and is known to have supplied pieces through the Garde-Meuble to Louis XVI's court and then to Napoleon and his family as well as members from the German, Russian, and Spanish courts. He was received as a maître ciseleur-doreur in 1763 and in 1784 he was joined by his son Lucien-François who later became a director of the business, working alongside his father at familiy workshop at the rue Notre Dame de Nazareth, Paris. By 1807 Feuchère's business was described as one of the most important in Paris. Coincidently in the sale of the Feuchère firm, held on the 29th January 1829, lot 73 describes a 'pendule de Jason enlevant la Toison, dorée et au vert avec cage et mouvement' which most probably refers to this particular model.
The model has also been attributed to the silversmith and bronze founder, chaser and gilder, Louis-Isidore Choiselat (French, 1784-1853) and a comparable model, again on paw feet, was offered at Sothebys Paris, 'Important Mobilier, Objets d'art et Orfèvrerie' 28 June 2022, lot 63.
