Christian Richter (Swedish, 1678-1732)

Edward Bayly, later 1st Baronet (1684-1741), head and shoulders facing left, wearing an ermine-trimmed red gown, gilded breast plate and white cravat, tied wig.
Watercolour and bodycolour on vellum laid down on card, inscribed on the reverse, Sir Edward/ Bayley (sic)/ Bart, later gilt-metal frame, the reverse engraved with a transcription of the inscription on the backing card.
Oval, 65mm (2 9/16in) high

Footnotes

Edward Bayly was the son of Nicholas Bayly, sometime Governor of the Isles of Arran, and his wife Dorothy Hall. From 1705 to 1714 he held the seat for Newry in the Irish House of Commons. He married in Dublin in 1708 Dorothy Lambart, daughter of the Hon. Oliver Lambart, 3rd son of Charles, 1st Earl of Craven. Upon the death of his cousin Nicholas Bagenall in 1712 Bayly inherited significant estates in Anglesey and Ireland. In 1730 he was created a Baronet, of Plas Newydd in the County of Anglesey and Mount Bagenall in the County of Down.
