A Vienna, Sorgenthal period, gold-ground cabinet cup and sacuer, circa 1789

Each reserved with a circular panel finely painted en grisaille depicting, on the cup, an allegory of painting with Flora and Cupid with a painter, the saucer with the punishment of Cupid, the burnished gold ground with tooled formal borders to the rims, the saucer: 13.6cm diam.; the cup: 6cm high, shield marks in underglaze-blue, both with impressed date code 89 and numeral 39, the saucer with gilt numeral 107 (2)

The same scene as on the saucer occurs on a cabaret tray, now in the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna (MAK), inv. no. Ke 4590. The scene on the cup also occurs (in colour) on a saucer painted by Anton Kothgasser (Ke 7799).
