The border decoration on plates with this typical blue and white border are often linked on stylistic grounds to the arms of the Wittelsbach family. A Sèvres service was given by Louis XV to the Prince-Elector Carl Theodor von der Pfalz in 1760. The service differs from this one in the addition of ornithological elements. In 1756, Madame de Pompadour had already given a jug and basin of this distinct pattern to the Wittelsbach Elector; see Rosalind Savill, Everyday Rococo Madame de Pompadour & Sèvres Porcelain, vol. 2 (2021), p.708. The author notes that David Peters already identified another dozen plates purchased by Madame de Pompadour in April 1762, which subsequently arrived at Versailles, where the decoration was described as 'mosaïque blue, dessein de Choisy de Roy'. Madame de Pompadour ordered vast amounts of this popular pattern. Savill (op. cit., vol.2, fig.15.47) illustrates a plate - probably one of eighteen bought by Mme de Pompadour in December 1758 - now in the collection at Stratfield Saye House, Hampshire.
