Of deep, tapering square section with a slightly flared foot, applied with a loop handle to one side
9.52cm high; 17.14cm across (including handle) (minor glaze losses)

This form of vessel was commonly found in the Flemish countries throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and contained live coals from which a pipe could be lit. Dutch and Northern European paintings of this period frequently depict these vessels in tavern scenes, often placed on the floor.
