A Castelli armorial dish, circa 1730

Painted in the well with a seated figure reading a a book on a lectern, another on a bench beneath his right arm, attended by a winged putto, with column and a drapery behind and a view of distant buildings and figures in a landscape, the rim with the arms of Cardinal Tommaso Ruffo (1663-1753), flanked by putti with cornucopiae, scrollwork and flowers on a pale-yellow ground, 34.4cm diam.

Footnotes

Tommaso Ruffo (1663-1753) was created Cardinal in 1706 and Archbishop of Ferrara in 1717, Bishop of Palestrina in 1726, and of Porto e Santa Rufina in 1738. He became Dean of the College of Cardinals and Bishop of Ostia e Velletri in 1740.
