Provenance:
The Twinight Collection

This portrait is likely based on a full-length portrait of Christian IX painted by H. Olrik in 1871 and now in Amalienborg Castle. He is wearing the symbols of the Orders of the Elephant and of the Garter on his uniform.

In 1863 Christian IX succeeded the childless Frederik VII as king and was the first monarch from the House of Glücksburg line of the Royal family. In 1842 he married Princess Louise of Hesse-Kassel, with whom he had six children, four of whom later ascended European thrones.
