A Meissen commemorative cup and saucer with an associated cover, circa 1810

The cup with a dedication in platinum script below a blue band with a basket of vases flanked by colourful foliate scrollwork between gilt borders, below a formal floral border around the gilt-edged rim, the handle with formal borders, the saucer with a circular scene depicting a classical maiden putting a laurel wreath on a bust on a plinth inscribed 'BöTTGER/ MDCCCX', with early Meissen stoneware and porcelain vases and a figure to one side on the stepped base, all within gilt and beaded borders, the rim with a similar border, the contemporary associated cover with formal borders, the saucer: 14.2cm diam.; the cup: 7cm high, crossed swords and asterisk in underglaze-blue (the saucer with two asterisks), the saucer impressed 24, the cup with indistinct impressed marks including B; together with a framed colour print depicting the celebrations of the centennial of the founding of the Meissen manufactory, including the bust of J.F. Böttger depicted on the saucer, engraved by Wollmann after a drawing by Schröder, inscribed below 'Opfer des Dankes/ am Tage der Secular-Feier der Königl. Porcellan Manufactur zu Meissen, den 6ten Juny 1810/ nach der Natur gezeichnet von Schröder, geäzt von Wollmann' (4)

The cup is inscribed: 'Andenken/ der Saecularfeyer am 6. Juny: 1810./ Dem Herrn Superint: und Dompredr. M: Donner gewidmet:/ Vom gesammten Personale der Königl: Saechsisch:/ Porcellan-Manufactur zu Meissen.' [Commemoration of the secular celebration an 6 June 1810 / dedicated to the Superintendant and Preacher Mr Donner/ from the entire personnel of the Royal Saxon/ Porcelain Manufactory in Meissen].

The Lutheran theologian, Gottlob Sigismund Donner (1753-1823), was appointed pastor, preacher and superintendant of the cathedral in Meissen in 1784, and Doctor of Theology in 1810. This cup and saucer were presented to Donner on the occasion of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Meissen manufactory.
