A Meissen figure of a Turkish musician, circa 1745


Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, J.F. Reinicke and J.F. Eberlein, playing the lute, wearing a white headdress, log coat decorated with flower sprigs over white tunic and trousers, and yellow shoes, the base applied with leaves and flowers, 16.9cm high (left hand and neck of instrument restored)

The figure is mentioned in Reinicke's work records in June 1744: 'Eine Türkin auf der Cither spielend, 9. Zoll hoch in Thon bossirt' [modelled a Turkish woman palying the guitar in clay, 9 zoll high. The model was corrected by Kaendler in July 1744: 'Ein Türken Weibel Welches die Laute spielet Corrigiret und tauglich gemacht' [corrected a Turkish woman playing the lute and made useable], and was cut for moulding by Eberlein in June 1745, and subsequently repaired by him in December 1747 (quoted by S-K. Andres-Acevedo, Die autonomen figürlichen Plastiken Johann Joachim Kaendlers [..], vol. II (2023), no. 483.

The figure is based on an engraving by G-J. B. Scotin, Fille Turque jouant de Tehegout, after a painting by Vanmour, published in Charles de Ferriol's 'Receuil de cent estampes représentant diffèrentes nations du Levant...', Paris 1714, or the edition published in German by Christoph Weigel the Elder in Nuremberg in 1719.
