A very rare Meissen crinoline group of a cavalier and lady, the porcelain circa 1745, later decorated


Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, the lady holding her companion's hand, with a fan hung from her right wrist, wearing a green cap with gilt flowers, a dress decorated with indianische Blumen and an arched puce border with panels of gilt foliate scrollwork and a gilt-edged white underskirt, her companion holding a gilt snuff box and his tricorn hat under his left arm, wearing a purple-patterned puce jacket with yellow cuffs and gilt buttons and a blue sash, a gold-ground waistcoat decorated with flowers and white breeches, the base applied with leaves and flowers 22cm high (some minor restoration)

Mentioned in Kaendler's work reports in June 1744: 'Einen Neues Groupgen gehöriger maßen zerschnitten und zum abformen Zu bereitet, Welches Vorstellet Wie ein Ordens Ritter mit dem Stern auf der Brust, eine wohl geputzte Dame bey der Hand führet' [a new group cut appropriately to size and prepared for forming, which depicts how a knight of the order with a star on the breast leads a finely finished lady by the hand]; and in the Taxa of overtime work: '1. Grouppgen, einen Cavbalier so auf der Brust einen Stern dem Pohlnischen Orden anhangen hat, auch eine Tabattiere hält, bey der Hand aber eine geputzte Dame führet' [A group of a cavalier with the Polish order and a star hanging on his breast, also holding a snuff box, leading a finely finished lady by the hand].

A similar group was in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Irwin Untermyer Collection, acc. no. 64.101.55; another is in the Pauls Collection (I. Menzhausen, In Porzellan verzaubert (1993), pp. 102f).
