AFTER GOTŌ MITSUYOSHI (GOTŌ SHINJŌ, 1780-1843)

A Very Fine Pair of Gold, Silver, and Shakudō Incense Jars
Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th century
Each modeled as a jar with a simulated kuchiōi cloth cover tied tightly at the neck by a simulated kuchio cord, the folds of the cloth falling over the shoulder, inlaid in silver, shakudō, and other copper alloys with a traditional seigaiha wave pattern scattered with an assortment of roundels containing motifs such as hō-ō (phoenix-like birds), kiri (paulownia), tsuchi (mallet of Daikoku, God of Wealth), peonies, and clouds, the interiors undecorated, with signature on the base in chiseled characters Gotō Mitsuyoshi followed by a kaō (cursive monogram); each contained in a silk ami net bag, with a double storage box, the inner lacquer box inscribed Ōgon kamegata kōtsubo (Gold incense caddies in the form of jars) (2)
