We are thrilled to offer a broad range of Korean works of art in this auction. Curated for this sale are items almost entirely from old family collections that were either brought to the US by the present owners or passed down to descendants before the 1960s, often with fascinating storeys of their family's pride and passion toward Korean art.The ceramic pieces are carefully selected to showcase Korean ceramic heritage, spanning 2000 years, from the Three Kingdoms period (18 BC-AD 660) to the early 1900s. The selections show old stoneware, celadon, buncheong and white porcelain wares. Superb examples include an ash-glazed stoneware gupdari cup, a sanggam celadon jar, a guiyal-type buncheong dish and a white porcelain bowl.More interesting, particularly to the young Korean art collectors, are the painting selections. Not-to-be-missed are an extremely rare painting attributed to Lee Jung-seop from a family collection formed in North Korea before the Korean War, an abstract painting by Nam Kwan, a still life by Geumchu Yi Nam-ho and two works by Kim Ki-chang.Previews will be held in our Marlborough gallery for the public on October 14-16 from 10am-5pm.
