Elegantly-shaped loutrophoroi were used during funerary and marital rites, such as carrying water for the bridal bath; in the Classical period monumental marble examples, such as the present lot, were dedicated as memorials to the deceased. For similar, see the Metropolitan Museum, New York, acc. no. 1975.284, formerly in the Ernest Brummer collection.
