Footnotes

"I might be best known for playing James Bond, but my role as Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF is the one I am most passionate about."
Sir Roger Moore

It was Sir Roger Moore's friendship with actress Audrey Hepburn that steered him towards what became a pivotal role in his life: "My curiosity got the better of me after Audrey introduced me to UNICEF. I wanted to find out more than just the facts and figures." He was appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1991 and served as such for 27 years.

Sir Roger was a steadfast advocate for children – visiting UNICEF-supported programmes around the world, bringing attention to violations of children's rights and generating large support and donations. His first visits as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, to Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala and Honduras, showed him the conditions and complex challenges faced by the world's children and the breadth of UNICEF's work to build a better world for every child.

Sir Roger was a compelling voice on issues such as HIV and AIDS, landmine injuries and child vaccinations. As the honorary chair of Kiwanis International's Worldwide Service Project – a key UNICEF partner – he helped raise $91 million for the elimination of iodine deficiency.

In recognition of his humanitarian achievements on behalf of UNICEF, Sir Roger received a CBE in 1999 and a KBE in 2003. He also received the World Service Medal from Kiwanis International in 2001 and the German Federal Service Cross in 2003 for his work battling child trafficking as special representative to UNICEF. In 2012 he became the first-ever recipient of the UNICEF UK Lifetime Achievement Award.
