FOREIGN LANGUAGE EDITIONS OF STEINBECK'S WORKS, MANY FROM HIS LIBRARY.

167 volumes of foreign language translations of the works of John Steinbeck, 1939-1965.

In a letter to David Heyler dated April 19, 1950, Steinbeck writes, "You will shortly begin getting translations of my books. I notified the office to send them direct to you, since you are good enough to keep the books for me. You of course may take any for yourself that you want" (see index of lot 89). In addition to accepting the new translations sent by the publisher, Heyler also scooped up many of the earlier translations from Steinbeck's own library, including two titles that bear his blindstamp and one that is signed by his ex-wife Carol. Titles present include Cup of Gold, The Pastures of Heaven, In Dubious Battle, Tortilla Flat, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, The Moon is Down, Cannery Row, The Wayward Bus, The Pearl, A Russian Journal, East of Eden, and The Winter of our Discontent, among others. Languages represented include French, Spanish, Italian, German, Flemish, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Czech, Russian, Icelandic, Chinese, Dutch, Portuguese, Hungarian, Japanese, Greek, Korean, and Punjabi, among others. A complete listing of titles is available upon request.
