ADVANCE UNCORRECTED PAGE PROOFS.The Acts of King Arthur was one of Steinbeck's final projects, left unfinished at his death. Steinbeck loved the concept of using the tales of Malory to connect to the present, but in practice he found it difficult to complete the work. Many people encouraged Elaine to publish the work after Steinbeck's death, but she demurred at first, feeling that John would not have wanted it and that perhaps it would tarnish his reputation. Instead, she released Journal of a Novel (which Steinbeck himself had thought about publishing) and a compendium of his letters. Finally, in 1976, after rereading the manuscript and finding it better than she remembered, Elaine agreed to publish the work, which found a receptive audience. Goldstone & Payne A47a; Morrow 264.
