GALLEY PROOFS AND DELUXE EDITION OF JOURNAL OF A NOVEL.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. Journal of a Novel. [New York: The Viking Press, 1969.]
78 leaves, folio, printed on rectos only of long, unbound galley sheets. With minimal editing marks in blue pencil. Lightly thumbed, some wear at extremities. WITH: Journal of a Novel. New York: The Viking Press, 1969. 4to. Publisher's half blue morocco over cloth, glassine wrapper, slipcase. Edition of 600.

For those of us who are fascinated by the question of how books are written, Journal of a Novel is a Godsend. For East of Eden, Steinbeck intended to "keep a double-entry book—manuscript on the right-hand page and work diary on the left ... we will have to see whether the practicing through the years has prepared me for the writing of a book. For this is the book I have always wanted and have worked and prayed to be able to write. We shall see whether I am capable. Surely I feel humble in the face of this work." The text on the left hand side of Steinbeck's fancy notebook takes the form of a series of letters to Pat Covici. After the author's death, Elaine Steinbeck edited and published the "letters" to Pat Covici as a history of the writing of Steinbeck's magnum opus.
