STEINBECK'S FIRST NOVEL INSCRIBED TO HIS LITTLE SISTER, MARY.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. Cup of Gold. New York: Robert M. McBride & Co., 1929.
Publisher's goldenrod cloth, lettered in black to upper cover and spine. Some offset from clipping to endpaper and p 6-7 from clippings laid in (present), spine slightly cocked, some thumbing and wear to cloth.
Provenance: John Steinbeck, presentation to Mary Steinbeck Dekker; by descent.

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED TO HIS YOUNGEST SISTER MARY S. DEKKER on the front pastedown: "For Mary / with love / John Steinbeck," with sketch of duck below. When Cup of Gold appeared, the publisher neglected to send even one copy to Steinbeck. This book was sold in a Los Angeles bookstore, picked up by Steinbeck when he and Carol moved to the Eagle Rock area in 1930. Though in later years Steinbeck was embarrassed by his first published novel, the work represented the culmination of several year's labor, and explored themes that would reoccur in later, more successful fiction. Goldstone & Payne A1a.
