Provenance: John Steinbeck, presentation to David Heyler; by descent.

A PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED TO HIS NEPHEW-IN-LAW: "For Dave Heyler—this maverick edition. It seems to have been made for me personally by Viking Press. I heard that such things have no value but for what it has—it's yours. With all the best / John Steinbeck / 3/11/64 / New York." This presentation binding, on a second printing before publication, not noted by Goldstone & Payne, or by Morrow. Goldstone & Payne A38b (for the first trade edition).
