8vo. Publisher's beige wrappers printed in red. In original transmittal envelope from Viking Press, signed by Steinbeck above the return address. Very fine; envelope with chipping and wear. WITH: a second copy, also fine.
Provenance: John Steinbeck, presentation inscription to David and Joan Heyler (and transmittal envelope); by descent.
PRESENTATION COPY, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED beneath Steinbeck's portrait: "For Dave and Joan / from an uncle / John Steinbeck." A lovely presentation copy to close family members. Viking printed 3200 copies of Steinbeck's Nobel Prize in Literature acceptance speech for distribution by the author and publisher. Steinbeck's short speech praises the importance of writers and writing. Goldstone & Payne A40a.
