8vo. Publisher's printed wrappers. Thumbsoiling to covers. INSCRIBED on the half title: "John / With all good wishes for the New Year. / Dag." With ALS of Elaine Steinbeck, November 4, 1991: "Dear David: Please put this in your Steinbeck Collection. Dag sent it to John shortly before he lost his life. They were very close and loving friends."

2. MORISON, SAMUEL. A New and Fresh Translation of the Letter of Columbus Announcing the Discovery of America. Madrid: Graficas Yagues, S.L., 1959.
8vo. Publisher's wrappers printed in red and black. Some toning at extremities and thumbsoiling to covers. INSCRIBED on the upper cover: "For John Steinbeck / Samuel E. Morison," and with a TLS of Morison to Steinbeck, October 31, 1964 transmitting the imprint. With ALS of Elaine Steinbeck to David Heyler, January 11, 1982, explaining the association: "Admiral Morison and John, among other distinguished Americans, were recipients of the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award the United States gives, at a ceremony in the White House in October, 1964 ... John and Admiral Morison were delighted to meet each other; each had admired the other for years. / John knew about this Morison translation of Columbus's letter to Ferdinand and Isabella after his first voyage to the New World, and Morison sent him this copy."

WITH: Autograph Sentiment of John Steinbeck, "Miss Joan Dekker / do not open 'til now [duck device]," on a scrap of folded brown paper, no date but before 1950. An old gift tag from Uncle John found among the Heyler ephemera.
