PIPPIN IV INSCRIBED TO SISTER MARY.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. The Short Reign of Pippin IV. New York: The Viking Press, 1957.
8vo. Publisher's blind-stamped strawberry cloth, top edge red, yellow spine lettered in red, dust jacket. Light shelfwear to head and tail of jacket spine.
Provenance: John Steinbeck, presentation to Mary Steinbeck Dekker; by descent.

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED "Mary / avec l'amite / from John the XXII." The idea for Pippin came to Steinbeck in 1954, when, living with Elaine across from the Elysee Palace, he hit upon the idea about a return of the monarchy to present-day France. At first he imagined only a short story, then a novella, but the idea was so rich with possibilities for satire, and so much fun to write, that soon Steinbeck turned it into a full- length book. Goldstone & Payne A36a.
