Publisher's goldenrod cloth, lettered in black to upper cover and spine. Lacking jacket, but housed in a custom morocco cover lettered and decorated in gilt. Offset from morocco cover to pastedowns and endleaves, internally very clean, minor shelfwear to head and tail of spine, cloth very clean.
Provenance: John Steinbeck, presentation to his parents; by descent.

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY STEINBECK TO HIS PARENTS: "To my mother and father / whose patience / and understanding / deserve a much better book / than this one. / John Steinbeck." From an early age, Steinbeck knew he wanted to be a writer. Despite their concerns about his ability to support himself through such a venture, Steinbeck's parents were incredibly supportive during his twenties, both emotionally and financially.
