ANNOTATED TYPESCRIPT OF "THE SUMMER BEFORE."

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. Typed Manuscript with Annotations, "The Summer Before," 13 pp, 4to, n.p., n.d. (but c.1955), pp 2-13 are typed carbons with offset from the carbon sheet, light toning to p 1, all leaves stapled together at upper left margin.

Published in Punch Magazine CCXXVIII (May 25, 1955), this is one of a series of interconnected stories based on experiences Steinbeck had growing up in Salinas of the early 20th century, featuring Steinbeck and his younger sister Mary and a whole crew of 6-year-olds enjoying their first summer vacation after beginning school the previous year. Jill the pony makes an appearance, her coat raggedy and her forelock overgrown, "fat from the spring grass so that we had hopes for a colt. Also, she was so soft that she wheezed painfully after a hundred yards of running from carrying too much grass fat." The children play together down at the river, annoyed by the presence of Willie, a new kid in town with an overbearing mother and a real mean streak. I won't spoil the twist at the end: suffice it to say I did not see that coming. Likely part of the ephemera Steinbeck sent to David Heyler in the mid 1950s.
