4to (258 x 172 mm). Publisher's limp buff wrappers, thread inner ties, front cover printed in red and black. Very minor thumbsoiling and bumping to cover. WITH: variant issue in publisher's cream wrappers printed in black, lightly thumbsoiled. Both housed in original transmittal envelope addressed to David Heyler and signed by John Steinbeck, May 17, 1954.
Provenance: John Steinbeck, presentation to David Heyler (inscribed envelope); by descent.

FIRST SEPARATE EDITION OF EAST OF EDEN. Angelo Valenti printed 125 copies of this short excerpt from East of Eden in advance of the novel's release. Steinbeck mailed these copies to his nephew-in-law, the bibliophile in 1954. Goldstone & Payne A32d and A32d variant 2.
