8vo. Publisher's green cloth gilt, spine stamped in gilt on brown background, edges stained terra cotta, publisher's slipcase. Lacking glassine wrapper; very minor shelfwear to slipcase, otherwise very fine.
Provenance: Mrs. Kilpatrick (letter from Everett Stuart of Viking laid in); Collection of David Heyler; by descent.

FIRST EDITION, DELUXE ISSUE, signed on the colophon by John Steinbeck. The undated TLS laid into the book and addressed to Mrs. Kilpatrick, who is not identified but may be a reviewer, reads, "Although John Steinbeck's new novel, EAST OF EDEN, will not be published until September 19th, your advance copy is now in the mail and should reach you shortly. This is an autographed copy of the limited edition for your personal library. / We have gone to considerable effort to place the book in your hands at this early date because we feel it is of the utmost importance that you read the book before I call on you."
