8vo. Publisher's maroon cloth lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge red, dust jacket. A few early leaves bumped, minor rubbing to head and tail of spine; jacket spine lightly sunned, crease at upper margin of lower panel.
Provenance: John Steinbeck, presentation to Mary Steinbeck Dekker; by descent.

PRESENTATION COPY OF THE REVISED EDITION, THE FIRST TO CONTAIN STEINBECK'S "ABOUT ED RICKETTS," SIGNED AND INSCRIBED: "For Mary with love / John." In 1951 Viking reissued the narrative portion of Sea of Cortez (and retitled it "The Log from the ..."), including for the first time Steinbeck's essay "About Ed Ricketts," the heartbreaking memoir of Steinbeck's dear friend that opens with Rickett's tragic death in a car-train accident and flashes back to his remarkable life and career.
