GALLEY PROOFS OF STEINBECK ARTICLES.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968.
1. "His Father." Reader's Digest (July 1947). Marked "first proof." 4to. 3 pp. Staple bound at upper left. Annotated in pencil by Steinbeck throughout. WITH: TLS of Ralph E. Henderson, managing editor of Reader's Digest, 1 p, 8vo, Pleasantville, NY, June 24, 1949, to John Steinbeck at his Pacific Grove address transmitting the proof. AND WITH: original transmittal envelope featuring Reader's Digest mailing label, addressed to Steinbeck, postmarked June 24, 1949.

Henderson writes, "Dear John: / In case you want to look it over, herewith a proof of your piece as scheduled for our September issue. Any corrections should be in by July 5th." "His Father" was written as Steinbeck's marriage to his second wife Gwyn was failing, and it clearly dramatizes the anxiety the writer felt over how that failure affected his sons. In the story, a young boy is bullied by his neighborhood over the absence of his father which he tries to explain away as travel instead of the impending divorce of his parents.

2. "How to Tell Good Guys from Bad Guys." The Reporter. February: 1955. (Reprinted from Punch. September: 1954). 4 long, unbound galley sheets. Leaves toned, folded, bumped at corners, closed tear at upper margin of p 1.

Galley proofs of Steinbeck's amusing article inspired by his son Catbird's understanding of how good and evil are represented on television, and in particular, how Catbird sees Senator Joseph McCarthy. (Spoiler alert: even Catbird thinks he's evil.)
