A RUSSIAN JOURNAL INSCRIBED TO THE HEYLERS.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. A Russian Journal. New York: The Viking Press, 1948.
8vo. Publisher's light bluish-green cloth, moderately yellow spine, top edge dark blue, dust jacket. Very light offset to rear pastedown, smudge to top edge, corners bumped, light shelfwear; jacket lightly rubbed at head and tail of spine.
Provenance: John Steinbeck, presentation to Joan and David Heyler; by descent.

PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author to Joan and David Heyler on the front free endpaper in phonetic French: "Vu du buiche [??] dun pi quah dus an plu k. / John Steinbeck." Not exactly sure what the joke is here, but Steinbeck may be commenting on signing this book for the newly married Heylers more than two years after its publication ("D'un pourquois deux ans plus que"). Goldstone & Payne A27a (binding variant 4).
