THE PEARL ANNOTATED BY ELAINE STEINBECK.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. The Pearl. New York: The Viking Press, 1947.
8vo. Publisher's brown cloth, top edge green, dust jacket. Some darkening to pastedowns, light shelfwear, underscoring throughout; some abrasions to upper cover and spine of jacket.
Provenance: Likely gifted by John and Elaine Steinbeck to David Heyler; by descent.

Second issue before publication, in first issue jacket, WITH INSCRIPTION IN ELAINE STEINBECK'S HAND to the rear panel of the jacket, directed to John Steinbeck regarding the photo: "Why didn't you have the photographer take off that wisp of unruly hair? This is a better view than what came out on the first copies, though. It shows how very Irish your eyes are." An oddity: we are not sure whose copy this was originally. The text is underscored throughout in a readerly fashion in black and blue ink, as a literature student would do. This copy may have belonged to Elaine Scott's teenage daughter Waverly before Elaine annotated the jacket for Steinbeck's eyes. Goldstone & Payne A25.
