STEINBECK'S FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT.

[STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968.] Salinas High School. El Gabilan. Salinas: Salinas Index Pub. Co., 1919.
4to. Publisher's blue wrappers printed in black and gold. Light spotting and thumbsoiling to edges; wrapper edges worn, small chips to spine, thumbsoiling.
Provenance: purchased by David Heyler from William P. Wreden, bookseller, October 26, 1983 (receipt and correspondence laid in); by descent.

STEINBECK'S FIRST PUBLISHED WORDS, comprising three articles he published in his high school yearbook: "The How, When and Where of the High School" (p 19); "[portion of] Class Will" (pp 36-37); and "Woodwork" (p 50). The first essay, the longest of the three, is a satire mocking information for parents of new students; the second is Steinbeck's parting words for school staff and undergraduates, and the third is a fairly straightforward assessment of the importance of the wood shop to the school. Goldstone & Payne C1, C2 and C3.
