ORIGINAL VALENTI ANGELO ILLUSTRATIONS FOR THE RED PONY.

ANGELO, VALENTI, illustrator. 6 original pencil, pen, ink and gouache illustrations on board for John Steinbeck's The Red Pony, produced in 1942 but not used, as follows:

2 double title-page designs, each 310 x 390 mm, with glassine overlays lettered in red and black, signed "Valenti Angelo" at lower left;
4 smaller illustrations 190 x 255 mm, signed ("Valenti Angelo") and lettered in pencil at lower left corner.
Provenance: Purchased by David Heyler from House of Books, Ltd., November 24, 1974 (receipt present); by descent.

The first title page sample artwork features a view of the Salinas valley in black and white, with the text falling entirely on the right-hand side. The second sample is a similar view but in ink and gouache in black, blue and tan, and with Steinbeck's name on the left-hand side. The four smaller illustrations are in three colors similar to the second title page.

Valenti Angelo (1897-1982) was a popular illustrator and printmaker most closely associated with the Grabhorn Press in San Francisco. His most famous Grabhorn title is probably the 1930 edition of Whitman's Leaves of Grass. He also was an author in his own right, penning several children's stories later in his career.

The Red Pony first appeared as a series of short stories published in 1933-34 before being collected into a single volume in 1937. In 1941-42, Steinbeck was working with director Lewis Milestone on the adaptation of the book, and Viking may have contemplated reissuing an illustrated edition to be published alongside the film's release. The film would not be shot and released, however, until 1949. Viking released an illustrated version of The Red Pony in 1945 with art by Wesley Dennis.
