Provenance: Presentation inscription from Steinbeck to David Heyler; by descent.

Stated second edition, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED on the front fly: "For Dave / John Steinbeck / [duck device]." This Swiss printed edition of Steinbeck's novel is one of the covert editions produced for a French-speaking audience during WWII. Goldstone & Payne D155.
