Provenance: first title purchased by David Heyler from Joseph the Provider, October 14, 1986 (receipt laid in); other titles ex-Jean Hersholt (small library tag in second title; signed bookplates 3rd and 4th titles, dealer receipts).

Among David Heyler's correspondence with book dealers, we found a letter from Marguerite Cohn dated March 11, 1954, alerting him to the upcoming sale of Jean Hersholt's books at Parke-Bernet Galleries, March 23-24, 1954. Heyler instead had one of the Dawson brothers bid for him. Tucked into Cohn's letter is a carbon of a receipt from Dawson's Book Shop for the purchase of "Moon is Down $27.50 / Tortilla Flat $17.50 / Jean Hersholt Auction," along with the original book tag and price. The Moon is Down sold for significantly more than Tortilla Flat.
