UNREVISED PROOF OF SEA OF CORTEZ.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. Sea of Cortez: A Leisurely Journal of Travel and Research.... New York: The Viking Press, 1941.
8vo. Publisher's brown wrappers, housed in dust jacket. Upper corner of leaves bumped, light shelfwear; jacket with bumps and small chip at head of spine, odd folds from unusual fit. With pre-publication slip from Viking, printed and typed, laid into book.
Provenance: purchased by David Heyler from David Magee Book Shop, November 21, 1953 (Typed Note Signed from Magee and receipt laid into book); by descent.

RARE UNREVISED PROOF, variant without title label. Mistakenly described by Goldstone & Payne as "First edition, issue in wrappers," this advance edition was printed without the scientific Appendix which constituted the second half of the first trade edition: the pre-publication slip reads: "contains introduction and narrative but does not contain illustrations or scientific appendix." Goldstone & Payne A15a; Morrow 139.
