TWO COPIES OF THE FIRST WATCH.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. The First Watch. Los Angeles: The Ward Ritchie Press, 1947.
12mo. Publisher's buff printed wrappers tied with string, in original envelope. Very minor gluestains and thumbsoiling to envelope. WITH: another copy of similar condition.
Provenance: at least one copy likely purchased by David Heyler from House of Books, Ltd, c. March 21, 1953 (correspondence with Marguerite Cohn laid in); by descent.

LIMITED EDITIONS, numbers 15 and 59 of 60 printed for private distribution, "ten for the use of the author and fifty for presentation by Marguerite and Louis Henry Cohn." Marguerite and Louis Henry Cohn were book collectors and the owners of the famous modern literature bookstore, House of Books. Cohn is best remembered for his bibliography of Ernest Hemingway's works, but this little chapbook, printed in 1947 for the Cohns (and Steinbeck) to use as holiday cards, is a highly sought after rarity. Goldstone & Payne A26.
