STEINBECK FAMILY PHOTO ALBUM.

6 leaves extracted from an album, paginated 1-2, 7-8, 17-18, 23-24, 25-26, 27-28, each leaf with black and white photos laid down, 54 x 80 to 80 x 135 mm, c.1908-1918, some images annotated below in pencil, perhaps by Mary Steinbeck, many leaves excised, some loss to a few images, toning and thumbing overall.

ALBUM OF EARLY STEINBECK FAMILY PICTURES, possibly collected by Mary as the inscriptions look quite youthful, but perhaps someone else. On page one, a group of girls is identified "In Watsonville 1915 / Johnstons, Millers, Rodgers." Several pages feature images of a car making its way down a winding dirt road into the mountains to Tassajara Hot Springs (included are postcards from the resort), about 45 miles from Salinas. On leaf 23 we have "Some Pictures in Salinas" with a young John, Beth and Rena Bromley, and "Beth in High School." The verso announces "Pictures of the Pony, Jill" with one photo ("John, Mary and Pony") missing, but images of "John and Glenn Graves and Jill" and another of Jill, John, Glenn and Mary on the street in front of the Steinbeck house, c.1908. Page 27 features a 120 x 165 mm photo of the "Salinas Choir," with both Mary and John Steinbeck identified among the singers.

WITH:
1. 7 203 x 254 mm (8 x 10 inch) gelatin silver print photos of Steinbeck, all with UPI stamps and captions attached, all dated November 17, 1962, produced after announcement of his Nobel Prize and to promote The Winter of Our Discontent.
2. A 295 x 235 black and white head shot by Gina Lollobrigida (stamped) and two other 8 x 10 portraits, including one taken Thanksgiving Day 1968 in New York.
3. A gelatin silver print oval portrait cabinet card of baby Mary Steinbeck
4. 2 85 x 145 mm black and white snapshots, c.1918, of Steinbeck on the front steps of the Salinas house with a black and white pit bull. Steinbeck looks full grown but seems to be in same outfit as photo that appears in Benson identified as c.1918. The dog might be Jiggs, Steinbeck's beloved childhood dog.
5. A 80 x 80 mm color snapshot and a 203 x 254 mm head shot, both of Steinbeck in later years.
